Summary

Our training is inspired by the Alzheimer’s Society’s accredited professional training programme, "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow".

It is divided into eight sessions supported by DVD/video clips and group exercises. The objective is to deliver a professional overview of dementia, but in half the time and cost of the equivalent Alzheimer’s Society’s programme. It is intensive and comprehensive, and is designed to offer practical suggestions, strategies and solutions.

The training is targetted at both family carers and professionals, ending in a "call to action". The family carers are asked to analyse who their support teams are, both for themseleves and the person for whom they care. The professional carers are asked to identify what changes they will seek to implement in their work proctices and what improvements can be made to their interaction with service users as well as other members of staff.

The Objectives

• Be acessible and remain within budgets and time constraints;
• Provide an undestanding of dementia and how it affects a person’s behaviour and their ability to communicate and look after themselves;
• Identify suggestions, approaches and strategies for improving the lives of both the family and the carer, and for coping with supporting a person with dementia;
• Provide an appreciation of the impact dementia has on the family, carers and others;
• Underline how quality care focuses on what a person can still do, with suggestions for activities;
• Examine food, eating and drinking issues associated with dementia;
• Highlight the importance of good communication;
• Provide strategies for dealing with "challenging" behaviour;
• Give an understanding the type of behaviour one can expect throughout the various stages of dementia;
• Empower the carers and family to help maintain an individual’s dignity, self-respect and independence;
• Develop the concept of person-centred care and the value of knowing a person's Life History.
• Establish the support infrastructure and teams.

Who should attend?

The training is targeted at those who have the responsibility of advising or looking after the elderly or those with dementia, physical or learning disabilities. For example:

• Families, private carers or spouses;
• Care professionals, social workers and nurses employed by domiciliary care agencies, day care centres, care homes, hospitals and other institutions;
• Charity staff, their clients, members and outreach workers;
• Members of social communities and networks, such as the Women's Institute, Verity Club, Community Centres;
• Members of religious communities and networks, such as synagogues, churches and mosques.
