Life History is an essential part of providing a person-centred approach to care planning and maintaining quality of life for the elderly and mentally or physically frail.
All behaviour has meaning. Misunderstanding someone’s behaviour can cause them to be agitated, "agressive" or "challenging". Knowing a person’s life history helps avoid such behaviour, especially when caring for someone with dementia.
Research shows that care professionals and third parties all respond from 70% to 80% more positively when they "know" a client’s background and personality.
As a family or group activity, a Life History project is rewarding and stimulating. It is also of great value to family and friends, young and old, as they reflect on the person’s life and share memories as a means of easing their sense of loss or bereavement.
