This training is divided into eight sessions of approximately 2 hours each, and is supported by DVD/video clips and group exercises. Each session is linked back to key CSCI (Commission for Social Care and Inspection) care standards and, as an externally-accredited course, the cost may be eleigible for Skill4Care funding.
The training provides a professional overview of dementia. The key messages delivered through the training are that care workers should try to see the world from the point of view of the person with dementia, understand how they may feel, what they may want, and through this understanding, be able to respond more effectively. The training shows how care workers can help people with dementia retain their independence, dignity, skills and self-esteem for as long as possible. It goes into some depth surrounding the causes of "challenging" behaviour and offers approaches in resolving it, stressing the importance of communication between those with dementia, relatives, neighbours and friends, as well as between members of staff, so as to improve the quality of dementia care.
